Howdy!

The 15th edition of the Cooks Register is being prepared. It is the ‘Social Directory of the Competition Chili and Barbecue Worlds’, a kind of Who’s Who of cooks. It lists names and addresses of cooks and their ilk, plus a whole lot more. It is published every two years.

The book was started in 1979 as merely an address book for Texas chili cooks, but over the years has added more information and grown to include all chili cooks (CASI, ICS, Tolbert cooks across the US & Canada) and barbecue cooks. The last edition listed cooks from 40 states and Canada.

What is listed in the book besides names and addresses?

Chili and BBQ Associations and related publications.

CASI Pods, their Great Peppers and Regional Referees.

Winners of International & World Chili Championships and Texas State Chili Championships.

Advertising of cookoffs, organizations and products interesting to cooks.

An Events Calendar of regularly scheduled cookoffs.

Appendix of names by Team Name and State & City

Birthday list of the people listed.

Why should you want to be listed in the Cooks Register?

Fellow cooks can contact you to give or receive information.

Cookoff promoters have your address to mail their flyers.

Business’ can send you information about their products.

Referees (or others) writing down winners can refer to the book when the hand written copy is difficult to read.

Great Peppers have a handy tool of useful information.

People outside your circle will know about you and you will find out about other cooks.

Impress your friends by having your name  listed in a 200+ page book.

The book (plus a family listing) will cost $20 plus $2 for shipping. Any additions or corrections received will be added to an addendum that is sent out to all who purchased the book in. Additions and corrections must be received prior to October 1. The next new book is scheduled to be published in the fall of 2006.

The book has been successful because people helped add information for sharing. If you know of a regularly cookoff (i.e. Terlingua International Chili is the 1st weekend in November) that should be listed or changed, please let me know. Same goes any new chili or barbecue organizations or publication.

Don’t forget about advertising. Prices remain the same on ads, from $36 for a business card, $60 for ½ page (4 ¼ wide X 3 ¾  tall) or $120 for a full page (4 ¼ wide X 7 ½ tall). Advertising space is not only to sell products or services or promote cookoffs. Let the Chili & BBQ world know you are especially proud of a team or cook, or send a special thank-you.

I hope you will want to be included in the book, and will encourage your friends to be included. The more names listed, the better the book is for all who use it. Some people have even sent in the information for their friends so they can have a handy place to find their address and phone number.

An application form is included with this letter. Please add some B.S./ Comments with your information. The comments can be serious about your accomplishments, or funny or whatever you want folks to know about you.
